Newly Elected Lodge Officers

As many of you know at the most recent function, the Spring Fellowship, our lodge held elections for the Lodge officers. The following were the results of the election:
Lodge Chief: Christopher “Slinky” Mocarski;
Vice-Chief of Administration: Galen Helfter;
Vice‐Chief of Program: Hunter Gable;
Lodge Secretary: Noah Krechel;
Lodge Treasurer: Alex Jernigan.
These are the brothers who will be serving our lodge in key leadership positions for 2012-13. Please support them and advise them in any way you can

2011 Spring Ordeal

Our Spring Ordeal will be May 18-20, 2011 at the ever beautiful Camp Ho Non Wah. Please register as soon as possible if you have not done so yet. As our lodge has done in the past we will be having brotherhood ceremonies and Ordeal ceremonies for the candidates. Please preregister for the Spring Ordeal so that you do not have to worry about it while checking in (and the early bird deal isn’t a bad motivator either). I hope to see each one of you at the Ordeal for friendship, brotherhood, and service

NOAC 2012

More than 8,000 Arrowmen will travel to East Lansing, Michigan, home to the 2012 National Order of the Arrow Conference at Michigan State University. Arrowmen will participate in a 6 day conference focusing on top notch training sessions, cool recreational opportunities, attending evening shows full of theatrics and special effects, and checking out the exciting programs NOAC has to offer. NOAC will be held from July 30 through August 4th, 2012 this conference only happens every 2-4 years. The NOAC experience has been compared to National Jamboree for fun and excitement. There are currently a few remaining spots to attend NOAC this summer, the cost is $695 for the full charter bus trip, lodging, food, patches, memorabilia, and an experience of a lifetime. 2012 Dixie Wrap-Up

Good Morning All,
We had a great time had Camp John J. Barnhart this weekend and I thought I would let you all know some of the high lights of the weekend.
Friday:
-After arriving the Lodges all assembled for the opening show which was pretty hot(literally the ground caught on fire on both sides of the stage), and soon following the patches began to appear.
Saturday:
-During the morning the ceremonies teams took to the ring, doing two outstanding cermonies in the Pre-Ordeal and Brotherhood. Chris Mocarski was told he was too energetic as an Allowat Sakima, but I firmly believe that he simply is exhibiting the Wingalosik, or cheerfulness of our order.
-The trainings went off without a hitch, with our very own trainer, Noah Krechel, was praised by the region chief for his presentation on becoming an OA officer. Good work Noah.
-Following lunch the tetris pieces went crazy, and there wasn’t a single place in the 1,000 acre camp without seeing one of our lodge in a tetris suit. Our section adviser, Mac McLean, later commented that 236′s innovation with our theme was some of his favorite props from the last decade.
-During the afternoon our very own Hunter Gable competed for the his first time in the Grass dance competition, making it all the way to the semi finals and only being disqualified for losing a bell. Great Job Hunto! This marks the first youth American Indian Affairs competitor we have had since Matthew Daniels in 2010.
-Also in the afternoon our lodge brothers competed furiously in the quest for the Golden Arrow. Along with the slew of Quest awards seen bellow I wanted to specifically congratulate the entire Ultimate team, whose Drew Hiner had an outstanding performance. In the first round, Drew made the game winning catch in overtime after the disc had been tipped away by a Catawba player, Drew who was running the opposite direction made a 180 and dove fifthteen feet catching the disc. Beautiful.
-That evening our Lodge Chief, Alec Surrett, ran for section office and was elected to the position of Section Secretary. Please note that this is the first time since 2006 that a member of Unali’Yi Lodge has held section office.
Sunday:
-Following a great service by the host lodge, the awards ceremony held the results for our Lodge as so(please note I have a limited memory, and if i missed any please correct it in the comments bellow):
–Quest for the Golden Arrow
—3rd Rope Throw
—3rd Fire Building
—3rd Ultimate Frisbee
—3rd Chariot Race
–Inductions and Ceremonial Events
—Preordeal
—-Honor Team
—-2nd Kitch: Zach Howard
—-3rd Meteu: Edward Leber
—Brotherhood
—-Honor Team
—-3rd Kitch: Chris Mocarski
—-3rd Meteu: Edward Leber

-Also I would like to thank James Barton and David Surrett for their continued contribution to the section as Advisors.

Great Job everyone for all of the work you put in, and I can’t wait for next year when we host at Camp Ho Non Wah.
Yours in the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service,
Alec “Goodies” Surrett

Dixie 2012

Brothers,

We are 16 days away from Dixie 2012, April 27,28,29.  As of Friday we have only filled 31 of our 60 delegate slots for this years Dixie fellowship.  It saddens me to see such a small turn out at an event that is so important to our lodge.  Not only are we participating in all the events with minimal youth attendance but we will be trying to promote Dixie 2013 at our own Camp Ho Non Wah.

This year we travel to Camp John J. Barnhardt in Stanly County, North Carolina. The camp sits on the edge of the Uwharrie National Forrest.  Our trip will involve some fantastic scenery as well as all that Dixie has to offer.   It is not too late to participate in this memorable event.  If you are interested in participating as a youth or adult please contact Matt Miller: msmiller@bsamail.org , myself ed@hargray.com or the Council office.

Below is the letter sent out by the lodge in January.  I do hope to see as many brothers from Unali’yi as possible.

Yours in the Brotherhood,

Ed Meyerink

We’re quickly nearing the date for our Section SR-5 Fellowship, better known as Dixie. One of the most important factors for our Lodge’s performance at the event is spirit. Spirit is how we show pride in our lodge, and perhaps the best way to show this spirit is with a strong theme. In the past, different lodges have used themes including ninjas, cavemen, Ironman, cornucopia of colors, baseball, carnival, military services, and Hollywood, to name a few. I’m certain that a few people will remember the situation a few years ago when our Unali’yi and Santee Lodges both had the same theme of Christmas at Dixie. This won’t happen again.

Our spirit theme this year is from Maui Inali Chapter, it is 8 bit buck. A lot of the members of the lodge might be a bit confused by this but, as we could see at Fall Fellowship the chapter members were full of enthusiasm as they personified their favorite old school video games. Eight bit video games are the orginal arcade games that so many of us grew up with such as Pac Man, Super Mario Bro, Tetris and so on. This topic is very wide and there are literally dozens of ways we could go with this theme so we are simplifying it by assigning a game to each chapter. Kiawah is handling Pac Man, Chicora is taking Mario, and the remaining chapters are joining up with Maui Inali for Tetris. If anyone wants to help out with your respective parts contact your chapter chief. Please learn our lodge chants and songs from some of the more experienced members, and enjoy your time at Dixie in beautiful Camp John J. Barnhart.

If you have never been to a Dixie Fellowship you might be asking yourself what exactly is this event. Well the Dixie Fellowship is the area conclave for Section 5 of the Southern Region of the Boy Scouts of America comprised of 11 Lodges from Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. This annual event is hosted by one of the lodges within the Section. This weekend is unlike any other Lodge activity in that there will be over 1000 Arrowmen participating and competing in a variety of activities. These activities range from training sessions and Ceremonies competitions in the morning to sports and American Indian activities in the afternoon and let’s not forget patch trading, food and fellowship.

2012 Spring Fellowship

 Unali’Yi lodge’s Spring Fellowship! Our first event of the New Year is starting the year off with a bang. During the weekend we are preparing ourselves for the section conclave through fun and festivities. However don’t let this mislead you into thinking that this weekend is solely about preparation for the Dixie Fellowship, no this is a time to build our bonds of brotherhood through fellowship.

A big portion of the Dixie Fellowship, and similarly our Spring Fellowship, is the spirit competition. This year we have decided on doing an eight bit buck theme, which emphasizes on the retro video games pacman, tetris, and Mario bro. There is a new competition for this weekend, at the conclusion of dinner on Friday of the event; we will be closing the entry period for the t shirt design contest for Dixie. The t shirt should have the lodge name, number, the events name and year, as well as the fleur de lis and www on it. And mostly have the design represent the theme the best we can. Have fun and be sure to place an entry(this is open for adults and youth).

Also this fellowship is a strong attempt to unite the youth and adult members of our lodge. In the past some adults have wondered why they should attend the Fellowships if they aren’t doing any type of work project, but the opportunities this weekend hopefully will eliminate these doubts. The theme preparations done in the morning on Saturday and the Dutch oven Cook-off later that day hopefully will do just that.

Not only are we doing two yes I say TWO General Lodge meetings, we are also having the important Lodge officer elections. These elections will take place during the Saturday afternoon General Lodge meeting and the winners will be announced following the election.

I can’t wait to get back to the beautiful Camp Ho Non Wah, and I hope to see you there during our amazing Spring Fellowship for some time for brotherhood and fellowship.

            Yours in Brotherhood,

             Alec “Goodies” Surrett

Broken Arrow

Dear  Brothers,
I am saddened to announce the passing of Vigil Brother William R “J.R.” Dudley Jr. after a long illness.  Throughout the 1990′s and into the 2000′s, as both a youth and adult member, JR was an integral part of the lodge dance and sing team.  Occasionally a grass dancer, and mostly a singer, he was always a friend, brother and teacher to the team.  To say that he was the “rock” of the sing team in all those performances and competitions would be an understatement.  He received the Vigil Honor in 1994.  His Vigil name: “Determined Teacher”.
He is survived by his wife Michelle and his sister Blanche.  Condolences may be sent to the family at 120 Cuthbert Drive, Goose Creek SC 29445. He was 35.  A memorial fund has been set up for his family.  If you would like more information on this please contact Vigil Brother Tim Larkin at timlark2@hotmail.com.
I have been informed that it was JR’s wish to be creamated with no memorial services held.  Instead, there will be a “Celebration of his Life”, tentatively planned for early April.  As soon as I receive information on this, I’ll pass it on.
Yours in WWW,
Rusty Riddle
